Hey! My name is Camilla
I’m a recent college graduate; math major with a studio art minor. Here’s a little bit more about me as a person outside of my work and portfolio!
When people ask me what my favorite math class was in college, they’re usually expecting something a little more fancy sounding than geometry. So when I add that the class was technically called “Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry” they seem a bit more pleased; if now confused. “Whose this Euclidean guy?” And now they’re in for the long haul as I get started on my “who was Euclid,” “what were his five postulates,” and “how mathematicians spent hundreds of years trying to disprove the fifth one only to realize they couldn’t and so the birth of non-Euclidean geometry came about as truly a happy accident” lecture. There’s truly more drama in the math community than people realize. But historical math squabbles aside, the reason I loved this class was because of how how mind-blowing it was on a daily basis. We start with simple geometry, but then three weeks in, suddenly questions like “what if rectangles didn’t exist?” began to pop up and from then on, my mind was in a constant state of shock, awe and confusion. I’ve always been a curious person by nature, so classes that make me think outside of the box have always been a favorite. Outside of math, my favorite class in college was one called “History of Human Sexuality” that I took my last semester of senior year. This was another class that forced me to reconsider my world view with each class session. I think I’m at my happiest when I’m pushing the boundaries of my mind in way I haven’t before.
Moving away from academics, in my free time I enjoy horseback riding, swimming, and playing video games. My favorite game right now is defintely Minecraft (I know, I know) but I also love Overwatch, Breath of the Wild, and Stardew Valley. I’ve also enjoyed traveling around the world a bit (pre-pandemic times) and have been to Cuba, Costa Rica, Scotland, Italy, and France over the years. If I had to choose a favorite place, I’d probably say Scotland; something about those rolling green hills and seaside cliffs really calls to me. I am an avid Boston sports fan, though I do believe I am rather sensible about it and not completely a die-hard fan (yet). And that’s me!
